Academic Team Block Letter

Introduction  

Obtaining a Block Letter during high school represents a significant achievement in one or more areas of curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities.  The Block Letter for Competitive Academic Teams is obtained by participation in both a competitive Academic Team AND in academics and/or co-curricular and extracurricular activities.  

Students can receive their Block Letter for participation in the following competitive teams:

  • Academic Decathlon
  • DECA
  • Hackathon
  • HOSA
  • Mock Trial
  • Science Olympiad
  • Speech and Debate

Criteria

In order to receive a Block Letter in Academics a student must meet the following criteria

Activity Description

Requirement

Member of, and participant in competition events on a competitive academic team.  

  • Academic Decathalon-- at least 2 years as competing member
  • DECA--Member of the club for at least 2 years and participation in competitive events for 2 years.
  • Hackathon--Member for at least 2 years and participation in competitive events for 2 years.
  • HOSA--Member for at least 2 years and participation in competitive events for 2 years.
  • Mock Trial--Member of the Varsity Team for 1 season.
  • Science Olympiad--Member of the Blue Team for 1 season.
  • Speech and Debate--Member of the Varsity team for 1 season.

Attendance at all required competitive events and contests

Required for the number of years indicated above.

2.5 overall GPA

Required at the time of the award

Participation in the following:

  • Participation on another academic or athletic team for at least 1 season
  • Elected/appointed Student Leadership position on the team
  • Volunteer assisting/coaching with an academic team at the K-8 schools or in a local non-profit outside academic team.  
  • Volunteer assisting/coaching with an athletic team at the K-8 school or in a non-profit local recreation league.
  • Elected/appointed club leadership position in another club 
  • Participation in an on-campus play or musical
  • 6 hours of volunteer work at school or community sporting or performing arts events (concessions, statistics, scoreboard, gate, ushering, etc.) over and above the required 10 hours per-year

2 of the activities in the list must be completed while a high school student

Additional Honors

A student may earn additional honors in Academics (a pin or patch to add on to their letter) by accomplishing the following:

Participation in the following:

  • Participation in another outside academic or athletic team.
  • I served in an elected or appointed student leadership position on the team.
  • I have volunteered or helped coach an academic team at the K-8 schools or in a non-profit organization
  • I volunteered or assisted in coaching an outside athletic team at a K-8 School or in a non-profit local recreation league.
  • I have served in an elected or appointed position in another on-campus club.
  • I participated in an on-campus play or musical.  
  • I participated in 6 hours of additional volunteer work at over and above the required 10 hours-per-year.

1 additional activity in the list must be completed between the time the block was awarded and the application for the pin/patch
