Biomedical Science Pathway
Our Biomedical Science Pathway is a hands-on, project based pathway offered through Project Lead the Way. Project Lead the Way is the leading provider of rigorous and innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education curricular programs used in high schools across the US. STEM education programs like the one offered by PLTW engage students in activities, projects, and problem based (APPB) learning, which provides hands-on classroom experiences. Students create, design, build, discover, collaborate and solve problems while applying what they learn in math and science. They are also exposed to STEM fields through professionals from local industries who supplement the real-world aspect of the curriculum through mentorships and workplace experiences. PLTW’s comprehensive curriculum biomedical sciences has been collaboratively designed by PLTW teachers, university educators, biomedical professionals and school administrators to promote critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and real-world problem solving skills in students. Students in this pathway are also enrolled in a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) that provides students the opportunity to participate in conferences and competitions locally, statewide, and internationally. The organization Biomedical students join is called Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). Students at MHHS are regularly ranked among the top students in the state and international conferences each year.

Students in our Biomedical Science Pathway engage in a 4-year rigorous honors level course sequence that allows the to gain hands-on experience, access to professionals in the biomedical field, and culminate in projects and internships that are a great lead-in to future studies in the medical field in college and beyond. Upon completion of the pathway, students will receive Basic Life Support and HIPAA certification. Below is the list of our Biomedical Science courses in our pathway:
Principles of Biomedical Science

Human Body Systems
Students experience real-world scenarios and cases to see medicine in action – as they diagnose and provide treatment and rehabilitation to patients at an outpatient center, keep clients safe and healthy on adventure medicine trips in remote locations, and work in a research center to design laboratory investigations to explore development and aging.

Medical Interventions
Students delve into activities like designing a prosthetic arm as they follow the life of a fictitious family and investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease.

Biomedical Innovation
Students build on the knowledge and skills gained from previous courses to design their own innovative solutions for the most pressing health challenges of the 21st century. Students will have opportunities for job shadowing and industry certifications in Basic Life Support and HIPAA.

Students who complete the Biomedical Innovation biotechnology unit with an 80% or better are eligible for college credit through Ohlone College.
Students who are involved in the Biomedical Science Pathway are also involved with the national HOSA organization. Students in this organization participate in conferences and competitions locally, statewide, and internationally.
