AP English Literature and Composition
Course Description
AP ENGLISH LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION (Senior Year Advanced English) Students will interact with texts and with means and methods of writing through critical enterprises of reflection upon the works read and creative enterprises of synthesis in the style of those works. Writing assignments will largely address the following purposes: to understand, to explain, and to evaluate. Students will be writing and reading daily, probably more than they have in past classes. This will include, but not be limited to, weekly in-class prompts reflective of the style of those on the AP examination as well as polished analytical papers that will come from selection and further development of said prompts. Students will constantly address rhetorical techniques and strategies that they will be required to understand and synthesize into their own writing. In-class prompt responses and those selected for further exploration in formal papers will be evaluated primarily on effectiveness of argumentation, but will also be assessed and critiqued to strengthen style, conventions, clarity, and word choice and sentence construction. Students should plan on having an hour to devote to AP English homework every night. Fulfills the UC/CSU “b” requirement. This course is also eligible for UC honors distinction. Meets NCAA requirements. The AP Course is intended to be taken by students who will take the AP exam during May. Approximate cost of each AP exam is $100.
