.Important Notice: Dangerous TikTok Challenge Involving Chromebooks

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We want to bring to your attention a recent and deeply concerning social media trend that has emerged on TikTok, the #ChromebookChallenge. This challenge is targeting school-aged children and promotes dangerous and destructive behavior.

Students are encouraged to forcefully insert objects into the ports of their school-issued Chromebooks, with the expected outcome being sparking, fire, or smoke emission. This behavior poses significant fire hazards and may release toxic fumes, putting the safety of students and staff at risk.

Participation in this challenge is a serious violation of multiple laws and school policies, including:
  • California Education Code:
    • 48900(f) – Causing or attempting to cause damage to school property
    • 48900(k)(1) – Disruption of school activities
    • 48900(t) – Infliction of physical injury
    • 48915(a)(1)(A) – Causing serious physical injury
  • LUSD Board Policy and Student Conduct Code
Violations will result in serious consequences, including:
  • Immediate suspension
  • Recommendation for expulsion
  • Potential police involvement
  • Monetary fines for damages
We are asking all parents and guardians to have a serious conversation with their children about the dangers and consequences of engaging in such social media “challenges.” Our goal is to work together as a community to educate and protect our students.

Respectfully,
Irene Busuttil
Executive Director of Student Services
