Course Description

SOCIOLOGY: One semester course; Open to grade 10,11, 12. One semester (paired with psychology).    

The course is intended to give students a broad picture of the field of sociology with an emphasis on preparation for college and critical thinking.  It will offer students a set of intellectual tools with which to more accurately understand the society in which we live. The course will introduce the basic concepts, methods, and principles used in the scientific study of human interaction.  Basic concepts include culture, values, norms, roles, socialization, deviance, minority groups, gender and gender roles, prejudice, group dynamics, stratification, and social institutions (family, education, religion, political system, economic system). Participation, discussion, and feedback are strongly encouraged.  Group activity, work and cooperation are heavily emphasized. Most of the readings in this course are on the college level. Fulfills UC/CSU ā€œgā€ elective. Meets NCAA requirements.
