1:1 Chromebook Initiative

In the Fall of 2014, Mountain House High School implemented the 1:1 Chromebook initiative where every student will be issued a Chromebook for their educational work. Teachers and students will have access to Chromebooks 24/7, and are permitted to use the device outside of the school building. All classrooms at the high school will begin with a 1:1 environment which will support an equitable distribution of technology and ubiquitous access. In 1:1 classrooms the integration of technology is both intentional and spontaneously driven by personal inquiry. Technology ceases to be a scheduled event, freeing teachers and students to collaborate and create in real-time.

The High school’s 1:1 Chromebook program is influenced by California’s Adoption of the Common core standards, and by the way that information is exchanged in the Digital Age. Technology is directly referenced in 79 of the Common Core State Standards. It is the responsibility of the entire district to help students incorporate technological systems as they solve complex problems and express their critical understanding of curriculum and content. Providing constant access to technology both in and outside of the classroom is critical in meeting national standards.

In addition to the High School 1:1 program, LUSD is increasing access to technology in the classrooms at the K-8 level. With the addition of hundreds of Chromebooks across all of the school sites in LUSD, students are being given access to technology tools that will help teachers to differentiate instruction, blend the learning environment, help students collaborate, and turn the classroom environment into a place where the teacher becomes a guide and a facilitator of learning as opposed to the keeper of knowledge. Technological programs and assessments will be used to pinpoint instruction to individual students, and instruction in the classroom will focus more on project and activity based activities where students can apply their knowledge to the concepts that they are learning.

Transitioning to the Common Core have further precipitated changes to California’s educational system. New exams called developed by the “Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium” (SBAC) have now been implemented. The SBAC includes a consortium of stateswho worked together to develop a common set of K-12 assessments in English and Math anchored in what it takes to be ready for college and careers. These new exams help students demonstrate their ability to evaluate written information, determine validity of primary source material, synthesize coherent ideas from multiple streams of information, think critically, and write technically.

The push for the 1:1 program at the High School and the increased technology at the K-8 schools is a by-product of the Digital Age.The exchange of information has been redefined by an expanding global digital infrastructure and through the evolution of mobile technologies. Lammersville Unified School District, and Mountain House High School recognizes the rapid changes that are being made in today’s global environment, and the need to foster learning environments which reflect contemporary exchanges and interactions. With access to Chromebooks, and the ability to connect wirelessly to information available on the internet, students and teachers will actively participate in the consumption and production of media, build and contribute educational and social networks, and be active participants in developing ideas that can be utilized to solve the complex environment of the 21st century.
