Academic Block Letter

Introduction  

Obtaining a Block Letter during high school represents a significant achievement on one or more areas of curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities.  The Block Letter for Academics is obtained by participation in academics  AND co-curricular and extracurricular activities.  Students who wish to obtain their Academic Block Letter must fill out the Academic Block Letter Application found here: https://tinyurl.com/mhhs-block


Criteria

In order to receive a Block Letter in Academics a student must meet the following criteria

Requirement

Cumulative weighted GPA of 3.5 or above

Cumulative GPA after 4 or more full semesters (not including summer terms)

No “D” or “F” grades on the student’s transcript (If “D” or “F” grades exist they may be replaced by summer school grades)

At time of block application

Positive Attendance record 

Cumulative after 4 or more full semesters

Participation in the following:

  • 2 seasons Participation in an on-campus sports team
  • 1 year in the Leadership Class with “A” Grade for both semesters
  • Elected/appointed Student Leadership position
  • Elected/appointed club leadership position
  • Completion of Yearbook/Journalism Class the “A”grade both semesters (1 year)
  • Participation in an on-campus play or musical
  • 1 year participation on any of the MHHS academic teams:  (Speech/Debate, Mock Trial, Academic Decathlon, Science Olympiad, HOSA, DECA)
  • Current Member of California Scholarship Federation
  • Member of National Honor Society or National Technical Honor Society
  • 6 hours of volunteer work at school or community sporting or performing arts events (concessions, statistics, scoreboard, gate, ushering, etc.) over and above the required 10 hours per-year

4 of the activities in the list must be completed while a high school student

Additional Honors

A student may earn additional honors in Academics (a pin or patch to add on to their letter) by accomplishing the following:

At time of application

Positive Attendance record with no unexcused or unverified absences

2 additional semesters

Participation in the following:

  • 1 year  Participation in an on campus club or organization
  • 1 year Participation in an on-campus sports team
  • 1 year in the Leadership Class with “A” Grade
  • Elected/appointed Student Leadership position
  • Elected/appointed club leadership position
  • Completion of Yearbook/Journalism Class the “A”grade(1 year)
  • Participation in an on-campus play or musical
  • 1 year participation on any of the MHHS academic teams:  (Speech/Debate, Mock Trial, Academic Decathlon, Science Olympiad, HOSA, DECA)

2 additional activities in the list must be completed between the time the block was awarded and the application for the pin/patch
